Watch me paint! Painting process video + New Youtube channel

painting-process-videoHellooo! Gosh it’s been a long time since my last post. I’ve been busy switching this blog (and my portfolio site) over to wordpress.org from wordpress.com. It’s taking literally forever and it’s been a total learning curve! (any questions, just ask!).

I wanted to share a video I made with you. It’s the first video on my new Youtube channel! In the vid, you’ll see the initial sketching and refining stage of a mini painting I made recently.

Before I started recording, I primed my canvas by applying multiple layers of a neutral / green base colour and lightly sanding between each layer. I do this because I’m not a huge fan of the canvasey texture. I prefer a slightly smoother painting surface.

Throughout the vid, you’ll see me sketching out my composition and correcting myself by using the natural base colour as a kind of eraser.

If you have any questions, I’d love to hear them. Ask away in the comments.

  1. Do you use the same neutral green base for all your paintings? What color did you mix to get the neutral green? loving all your artwork!

    1. Hey Ciera! Yeah, I tend to use a very similar colour but it could be more green or blue or brownish. I keep the base very desaturated and find it helps bring the painting together when it shows through the layers of paint. I don’t know how I mixed this exact colour but in general, it’s usually a colour or two, say green and blue, lots of white, and then a bit of the opposite colour on the colour wheel to desaturate. I’m not too fussy about what colour I start with though. I like to experiment. Hope that helps!
